The postgraduate programme in marketing started about fourteen years ago. Due to lack of full-time teaching staff, the programme was put on hold for some years until 2002/2003 academic year when it was revived. Subsequently, the Board of Graduate Studies of the University of Cape Coast, having considered the document for the programme, approved it. The Academic Board gave the final approval, and the programme was started in August 2004, that is, at the beginning of the 2004/2005 Academic year. The decision to introduce the postgraduate programme in marketing was part of the University’s grand strategy to establish its School of Business, which was a conversion from the then existing Department of Business Studies, which was established in the 1975/76 academic year. It started as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme with options of course work with dissertation or course work with thesis (MBA by Research). Later on, the programme was then divided into MBA Marketing and Master of Commerce (Marketing). However, the structure of the two programmes were similar, separated by the writing of thesis by the MCom students or dissertation by the MBA students.
